How to Make a Duvet Cover?

How to Make a Duvet Cover: A Step-by-Step Guide

Choose fabric, Measure and cut, Prepare the sides and corner, Sew the sides, Create the bottom Hem and Closure, Finish and Test Fit. By following these steps, you can create a custom duvet cover that perfectly fits your duvet insert and reflects your personal style.

How to Make a Duvet Cover? 1

Preparation: Gather Your Materials

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that suits your style and is suitable for bedding, such as cotton, linen, or microfiber. You'll need two panels, each measuring the width of your duvet plus 1 inch for seams, and the length of your duvet plus 2 inches for the bottom hem and closure.
  • Thread: Match the color of your fabric or choose a contrasting color for a pop of personality.
  • Pins: To hold fabric pieces together while sewing.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.
  • Sewing Machine: Or hand sewing tools if you prefer.
  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter: For cutting fabric.
  • Iron and Ironing Board: To press seams and hems.
  • Zipper or Buttons/Buttonholes: For closure (optional, but recommended for ease of use).

Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Fabric

  • Width: Measure the width of your duvet and add 1 inch to each side for seam allowances. Cut two fabric panels to this width.
  • Length: Measure the length of your duvet and add 2 inches to the bottom for the hem and closure. Cut both fabric panels to this length.

Step 2: Prepare the Sides and Corners

  • Finish Edges: Use a zigzag stitch or serger to finish the raw edges of your fabric panels to prevent fraying.
  • Mark Corners: Fold each fabric panel in half widthwise and make a mark at the center of each side to indicate the future corner seams.

Step 3: Sew the Sides

  • Pin and Sew: With right sides facing, pin the sides of the two fabric panels together, aligning the marks you made for the corners. Sew along each side, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
  • Reinforce Corners: When you reach a corner, stop sewing 1/2 inch before the edge and pivot the fabric to create a mitered corner. Continue sewing to the next side. Repeat for all four corners.

Step 4: Create the Bottom Hem and Closure

  • Hem the Bottom: Fold the bottom edge of your duvet cover up by 1 inch and press. Fold it up again by 1 inch and press again. Sew close to the inner fold to create a hem.
  • Add Closure: Decide on your preferred closure method. If using a zipper, attach it to the center of the bottom hem, following the manufacturer's instructions. Alternatively, sew buttons or buttonholes along one side of the bottom hem for a traditional closure.

Step 5: Finish and Test Fit

  • Trim Excess Thread: Trim any excess thread from your seams and hem.
  • Iron: Press your duvet cover with an iron to flatten seams and hems.
  • Test Fit: Insert your duvet into the cover and check for fit and functionality. Adjust as needed.

Crafting a custom duvet cover is a rewarding project that allows you to personalize your bedroom with unique fabrics and styles. Not only does it save money, but it also ensures a perfect fit for your duvet insert. The process involves measuring, cutting, and sewing to create a snug-fitting cover that will protect your duvet and enhance your sleeping experience.

The satisfaction of crafting your own bedding is incomparable, and the end result is a cozy and stylish addition to your bedroom.
